Westbay Marine Village – Victoria BC

Camping on Vancouver Island is wonderful. It is so expensive to get a trailer onto the island that, once you are there, you always find a campsite.

Westbay Marine Village is located right on Victoria’s harbour so it has spectacular views of the city. All the downtown Victoria attractions are five minutes’ drive away. If you don’t want to drive, Victoria Harbour Ferries can take you straight from the park to the heart of the city, or you can bike or walk as it is only 4 – 5 kilometres.

Golden, BC

Check out Camp That Site‘s banner photo above.  It’s such a fantastic mountain view from a private woodsy campsite that, to me, it epitomizes the perfect British Columbian camping getaway.  Problem is, we can’t remember what campground this is so I haven’t been able to do a review!  If anyone recognizes this place, please let me know.

Here is what we do remember about this campground

  • it was just east of Golden on the south side of the TransCanada Hwy.  Or maybe it was just outside Revelstoke?  Or maybe it was Canyon Springs??
  • it was an older, private campground
  • on the south/west side of the campground, was this gorgeous mountain view with a nearby town down in the valley
  • in August, down the slope lives a herd of big horn sheep
  • it was 2008 when we visited, so the place may have closed down since then.  We can’t locate such a place or find similar images on Google.

This park is located about 10 km outside of Squamish making it easy weekend access for Lower Mainland campers. Alice Lake is located just off the famous Sea to Sky Highway and right in the heart of some of the best hiking trails in the country.  There are 2 lakes with swimming beaches in this park and both have stunning views of the mountains. The campground has just under 100 campsites with about half of them offering electrical hook ups. This is unusual for a provincial park so if you can get a site with power grab it. The park offers all the privacy of a typical provincial campground and with its location to Vancouver it is very difficult to get into. Be sure to book 90 days in advance in order to secure a site. When our kids were young we kicked off summer by heading to Bear Creek Provincial Park for the Canada Day long weekend. It felt like the official start of summer and you could almost be guaranteed to have good weather.  Kelowna has a great Canada Day Festival in town with lots to do for the entire family and even without Canada Day you will most certainly be able to find something fun to do. The last time we were at Bear Creek was in 2004, this is largely due to the fact the park is hard to reserve, but these notes are based on those trips so the next time I am in Kelowna I will go back to check it out again.

We have only been lucky enough to book into this campground once. It is likely the most popular provincial campground there is and if you want a site you will have to get up  before 8:00, 3 months before the date you want to camp and start trying to book it, even then you are lucky if you get in. We were able to get the site because I logged on about the same time as someone was cancelling their reservation and I scooped it up. Otherwise, good luck!

Fort Camping, Brae Island Regional Park – Fort Langley, BC

It is not often that we get 14 degree C days in February but this year it has seemed like the norm. For that reason my husband, son and I decided to head out to Fort Langley for a sunny walk, a patio lunch and to check out Fort Camping on Brae Island Regional Park,  which is right in Fort Langley. We know several people who have camped here but we have never been to the campground ourselves. Keep in mind we only did walked through but I wrote down some notes, spoke to a very friendly employee and took some photos of the grounds. I consider myself very lucky, 16 years ago my parents started their dream by selling their home and moving aboard a 52 foot cabin cruiser. We spent many great summer holidays on the boat but as the kids got older there just was not enough room for all of us to sleep. That is where the camping came in. We would head over to Montague Harbour Provincial Campground and set up our sleeping spots. The trip to Montague starts with a short ferry ride from Horseshoe Bay to Galiano Island. This camping trip was a bit different because we were tenting. The cost of taking the trailer on the ferry was just too high and because we planned to spend most of our time on the boat it was not necessary to bring it over. With only 28 sites in the park reservation are recommended during peak season and it does fill up early. Lac Le Jeune Provincial Park – Kamloops, BC

Lac Le Jeune Provincial Park is located about 1/2 an hour south of Kamloops and a bit over a 1/2 hr north of Merrit, just off Highway 5.  The elevation, of almost 1,300 meters, can be both an attraction and deterrent when considering this park. Residents of Kamloops and Merrit flock here is the summer to get away from their often extreme desert-like temperature. You will find Lac Le Juen is on average about 10 degrees cooler than either of those cities. th (4) This park also has a nice beach and swimming lake although it can be very cold early in the season. The area is popular for fishing and there are also a couple of other good fishing lakes nearby. It is surprising that you are only 1/2 hour away from the city but once in the park you feel like you truly are getting away. Continue reading →

Growing up in Kamloops, I have been going to Shuswap Lake Provincial Park for years and it has been interesting to see how the area around it has changed. Shuswap Lake Campground is a very large park with 274 sites located on the beautiful Shuswap Lake. The park features paved roads, a playground, interpretive programs, hiking trails, bike trails, a boat launch, and a lake for swimming with a long sandy/pebble beach. The park also includes Copper Island which is only accessible by boat but is a fun day trip and provides activities like hiking and cliff diving. Although the park is large, it is very popular, so you will need to book your stay 3 months in advance in order to get a site. Continue reading →

Shuswap Falls RV Resort is located 22 kms east of Enderby, BC, Canada, on the banks of the Shuswap River and with a view of – you guessed it – Shuswap Falls.  Many of the sites in the resort are owned by the members of the Shuswap Falls RV Resort Club but they do offer some rentals.  Because of this, making a reservation is a good idea.
